Love Aussie MelonsThe Australian melon industry consists of approximately 250 growers producing, on average around 200,000 tonnes of melons annually across an area ranging from 6,000 - 8,000 hectares. The largest proportion of production is watermelons (60%) followed by rockmelons (30%) with honeydew and other melons (10%).
Melons are produced all year round and exported to a wide range of markets through sea and air freight. The main form of value adding is cut and wrapped fruit with fruit also utilised in fresh cut fruit salad mixes and juice products. Seedless watermelons are the main varieties with netted and smooth skin rockmelons available. Piel De Sapo melon have become more popular in the last few years.
The Australian Melon Association represents all Australian mleon growers and works to increase exports of high quality, safe fruit. The AMA also leads the industry response in issues such as food safety, biosecurity and technical production.
